Fascinating Scotland Street School

by Keith Ferguson
(Glasgow West End)

My Mum used to be a teacher, and when she came to visit me in the 'Big Smoke' recently, she begged to be taken to Scotland Street School.

I wasn't all that interested, but agreed to take her anyway. Was I in for a pleasant surprise or what!

Easy to find, we took the underground to Shields Road, and the school is right across the street.

It was amazing! The building is by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and it really was fit for purpose. The massive windows and striking tiles are gorgeous.

But what really blew both Mum and I away were the classrooms, and all the stuff on show, putting it all in context.

I'd completely forgotten about those coloured wooden rods that we used, when learning basic arithmatic - all those long years ago.

I'm so HAPPY Mum persuaded me to take her to Scotland Street School! What an enjoyable eye-opener.

Keith

Scotland Street School, bringing back memories!
by: Rachel

Hi there

I had a similar experience, visiting Scotland Street School.

I loved my school days - but once was enough! But I went along with a bunch of friends, just to see.

It was amazing. The building itself is stunning. The classrooms are sweet, and the amount of info all over the place makes it all really easy to picture.

Some of the photos of pupils in times long gone tugged at my heart.

Wonderful day out, thanks to Scotland Street School.

My best bits - Scotland Street School
by: Peter Mackay

Had a great time nosong round Scotland Street School.

The best bit for me was the toilets (ooh, those urinals!) and the pegs for coats... so low down I felt like a giant!

But they were designed for nippers, not grownups, weren't they? ;-)

Pay it a visit... and be quick, before the bell rings!

Peter
